Lappeenranta is located only a couple of hours drive away from the capital city of Helsinki. You can fly to Helsinki and rent a car there or use train or bus connection. Finland is famous for its good roads and safe traffic, so do not hesitate to grab the wheel and head for a road-trip! Lappeenranta and Imatra are located in the region of South Karelia in south-eastern Finland. The magnificent metropolis of St. Petersburg is just about 200 km away from Lappeenranta and Imatra. The region’s cultural life is rich and varied, mixing both old and new. There are events galore, particularly during the summer months. In the waters of Lake Saimaa, by far the greatest attraction is nature: the archipelago and lake scenery and the clear water.

Finnish Lakeland for active travelers

The active summer in the Saimaa area is full of fun things to do. In the waters of Lake Saimaa, by far the greatest attraction is nature: the archipelago and lake scenery and the clear water. If you are lucky, you may even see a Saimaa ringed seal basking on a rock on a summer’s day. Trying out the refreshing beaches and waters of Lake Saimaa is a must during your holiday. You can spend a relaxing summer day lazing on the beach or playing beach volleyball. There is plenty to do for fishing enthusiasts on the waters of Lake Saimaa that occasionally offers really big catches. For nature travelers, the Saimaa area has plenty of trails to hike and walks of various lengths. The beautiful archipelago views along the cycling routes make the trip fly by and the many sights and cafés are great places for taking a break. Train & bus

Simple and fast train and bus services will take you comfortably anywhere within no time. A trip to from the capital of Finland by train only takes 2 hours to Lappeenranta and 2½ hours to Imatra. All intercity trains have a restaurant wagon where even the longest trips will feel like one restaurant dinner.

Saimaa ringed seal

The Saimaa ringed seal (Pusa hispida saimensis) is one of the world's rarest seals, appearing only in the Saimaa waterway in Finland. The Saimaa ringed seal is highly endangered and was given protected status by the WWF in 1979.​​
