Crystal clear water and summer festivals
Very rare arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus) belongs to the salmon family and is found in Lake Kuolimo. Fishermen say that the water in this lake is so clear that a fish trap can be seen at a depth of 6 metres.

After an energetic hike or fishing trip the ramparts of the Kärnäkoski Fortress or the old Barge Port make a perfect picnic spot. Mansion Hotel Olkkolan Kartano provides both accommodation and meals in a romantic milieu, whereas the Europaeus Museum displays the life and work of famous D. E. D. Europaeus, a folklorist and colleague of Elias Lönnrot. The Hakamäki House Museum and the Church Builders’ Museum make their own contribution to the impressive list of local attractions.

The annual Sapassi Week in July is a fun festivity in Savitaipale. Events and happenings include e.g. concerts, farmes’ markets, exhibitions and flea markets. Active local societies organize also other attractive events around the year such as Partakosken Pamaus on the ramparts of Kärnäkoski Fortress and a tour skating event on the ice of Lake Kuolimo in February.

Gourmands are advised to taste vendaces and whitefish caught in Lake Kuolimo and the local sausages.
